What's cooking?

Inspired by the movie Julie & Julia and my Hell's Kitchen watching brother, it occurred to me that I could learn more about cooking. For instance, how to cut onions.

For my birthday, my darling children (I'm not sure they all know this) gave me the book
What's a Cook to Do? by James Peterson. It's a lovely little book filled with great tips for cooking including how to cut an onion. There is, in fact, a right way, and it is easier than the way I was doing it.

Add this book to my favorite, I'm totally in love with this, menu service over at "Relish! Time. Food. Life." and I am a cooking fool. This menu service always has great recipes but occasionally there is a winner that makes it pay for itself a million times over. Last week we tried the Slow Cooker Tortellini Sausage soup. Tortellini, I've discovered, should only be cooked in this way. This soup was amazing. This week our big winner was Relish's Pork Lettuce Wraps. My 15yo dubbed them Lettuce Taco Thingies and wondered as he shoveled 7! in his mouth, why we didn't just eat these every night.

Today I'm 40, I think it may be time to take a cooking or cake decorating class. This old dog can learn new tricks and it's fun to both get better at cooking and make it easier. And, as my Lettuce Taco Thingy eating son knows, it is a win/win situation for the whole family.

:P My daughter is getting ready to heat up a can of tomato soup, you should see her consternation. Forrest is making lunch for us all. But I did chop veggies & throw stuff in the crock pot so the kids can have Minestrone for dinner. Forrest & I are going out to Grace.

Happy, Happy Birthday!! Just like Virginia mentioned - cooking classes are great fun... me and some moms in my neighborhood did one at Stonewall Kitchen last year and it was a blast! BTW, I am going to try that Tortellini Soup - sounds delicious... I love to cook too!
