Coulda' Been Worse

We were driving in Brunswick on our way home from Cross Country last night when a pedestrian with an Labrador Retriever puppy entered the crosswalk in front of me. I stopped, of course, and waited for them to cross.

"Look at that cute Labrador puppy, boys," I said, turning my head to the right to follow the ball of cuteness and his owner.

And then.

BAM... bam... BAM!

I found myself at the front end of a four car accident.

The last car, apparently was driving way too fast, and rear ended a car which rear ended the car behind me which in turn hit my van and then bounced or rolled some twenty feet back. The three cars behind me were accordion crunched in the way that cars today are built to fold while saving the passenger space from damage.

My van? While there is most definitely damage -- I have an appointment at the auto body shop tomorrow -- my 2000 van was intact, and, after the policeman had made his report, mine was the only vehicle that was drivable.

I guess that five-star crash rear end crash rating was worth something after all.

Both boys are fine. I am so very thankful that both were in seatbelts and that Robby was in his booster seat.

My neck ached a little, and then a bit more... and then my back... urgh. We went to the emergency room. The lady two cars back was admitted ahead of me and in a lot more pain.

I have a bunch of the typical pulled muscles, mostly on the left side since my head was turned right. None of my ouches are in the spine, so I have that to be thankful for... but this morning I feel a bit like I slept in a twin bed with both boys and both dogs on top of me in spite of having taken a prescribed muscle relaxant last night. No fun, but I'm thankful that we are mostly all okay.

Here's a photo of the cute puppy (Harry) who, happily, was not injured or apparently worried by the chaos.

... and here is the exciting aftermath...

Yep... it definitely could have been a lot worse.

Yep, been there done that. Hardly anyone stops for people in crosswalks anymore, but I do and was also rearended! It is such a pain isn't it when you do the right thing and others don't. Hope you feel better and thank goodness the boys were okay!

Got to ask if the driver who started this chain reaction tail gating, talking on a cell, texting, or plucking her eyebrows or all the aforementioned. Why are pile ups like this so more common now than they were ten years ago! Glad everybody emerged unscathed!!!

Excuse me, ma'am... were you plucking your eyebrows when you hit us? LOL :0) Well, she didn't stab her eye out with tweezers when her airbags blew, but who knows what else she might have been doing... I did think of your blog about distracted driving!!

Man, that really stinks! I'm glad you and the boys are fine. Unfortunately, everytime something like this happens it can take a toll on the body and things can come up later having to do with the crash. Get rest and take care!

OMG Susan!! I am SO GLAD you guys are all okay. I love your van, does that sound weird? But seriously, I get so nervous with cars and their ability to withstand an accident. I am so happy you car held out. And that nobody got fatally injured.

SO sorry to hear about this. Same thing happened to my daughter & her kids, only it was a guy right behind her, as she approached a tollbooth (hel-lo...reduce speed!!!) Make sure if you have any new symptoms, you get checked out again, as some things don't show up right away. Hopefully, it'll be good healing all the way. Jackie's right regarding the driver who started the chain. Attention all drivers: Hang up & drive. Put down the whatevers and drive. Just drive. It takes 100% concentration. Ugh. Get better soon, Susan. So glad the children are OK.

I was amazed that NO ONE slowed down after the accident. People flew by the accident (worried they'd be asked to make a statement?) right after and even once the police and fire department arrived. When my husband came to the scene, a woman almost ran over him in the same crosswalk. Unbelievable!

I'm glad you're okay. Car wrecks are always so scary, especially with kids in the car. I think that you had the presence of mind to take a picture of the cute puppy after such an incident speaks volumes about your character.

You know you're a blogger when... you are rear ended, and your first thought is, "This is a bloggable moment!" :0)

I second and third everyone's above well wishes....pain in the neck to have to go through all that...LITERALLY. I hope your sore muscles subside soon and THANK GOODNESS THE CHILDREN were SAFE, THANK GOODNESS!!!! Did the person who caused all the grief have insurance?
Oct 1, 2009 07:50 PM
SBHFreelance says,
She had an insurance card (happily, all four drivers did)... we have a $300 deductible, which we have to pay out of pocket initially and then HOPE that this lady has enough insurance to cover two totaled vehicles, emergency visits for at least two drivers, AND my $300 deductible.

How scary! Thank goodness you were in the lead and paying attention though - that poor little pup could have been a goner! I hope your aches are subsiding... that kind of stiffness usually gets worse before it gets better... Hope your boys are doing okay too!

Can you imagine if I'd hit the guy and his puppy? That would have been so awful! I was incredibly stiff yesterday, but today, I'm a lot better (and hoping that this is the way it's going to be!!). I feel really lucky that we were all pretty much okay.
