My husband took the boys and his male English Setter on a two day upland hunting/camping trip. It's the oddest feeling for me -- especially because I homeschool, I guess -- not to have the boys around.

It is quiet.

No one is wrestling.

No one is saying, "Mom! Mom!"

No one is begging loudly to play X-box.

No one is forgetting to flush.

No one is leaving dirty socks on the floor.

No one has left crumbs on the table.

No one is slamming the door.

I've not had to remind anyone to be quiet when I've talked on the phone.

I haven't had to say, "No running" or "sh!"

I haven't reminded anyone to wash his hands.

I haven't refereed any arguments.

And you know what?

I can't wait for them to get home again.

Susan, you know what that reminds me of? Two things. Last night we planned to go out to dinner without H. and when her little face sulked and her eyes welled up, all I wanted to do was snuggle with her and watch a nice movie like E.T. her fave. Mike my hubby was ok with it (we had beer in the frig and left overs). And last weekend when we did make it out the door Sat for dinner, there we sat talking about H. We sat there eating dinner in a restaurant over wine (or beer for him) and talking about how much we missed her. This parenting thing is a balance for certain! ;-) LOL

Are we parents all just gluttons for punishment? LOL... I can relate to talking on and on about the kids on a "date night." I guess it can't be helped once you are a parent!

Isn't it funny how that always works out. Try to enjoy it. My husband and I are on a trip alone for the first time in years, and we keep discussing going home early. You know, because the kids NEED us. Sure they do. That's why they won't talk to us on the phone.

:0) I was just telling my husband that he and I really need to take a weekend to ourselves... that would be a first for us since Aaron arrived on the scene 9 1/2 years ago!!

It takes everything to go away before we realize we want it back again. Thanks for the reminder! :) Make sure you pamper yourself too a little. How about a girls night out? I wish I was there, I'd take you to a movie :)

Courtney and I had our weekly writing night on Thursday... okay, so we ended up drinking wine and cracking up on girl/mama humor for a few hours... it was better than a pharmaceutical, let me tell you! I jhad to teach this morning (which is why I didn't go on to the cabin with the boys), but I did take a nap this afternoon ... and I cleaned the bathroom of all ... ahem... little boy traces... while they were gone. Does that count? :0) If you were here, I'd take you up on that offer of a movie!!

Susan, love this blog, esp. the title. Let us know how long it takes for you to wish for just a few minutes to yourself after they get back with all the muddy, yucky clothes and equipment :) Ah - life is such a puzzle. Have a cup of tea - quickly!! And put your feet up, just for a moment or 2.

As for the title, the girl time was made all the more poignant since I was here alone with my FEMALE Chesapeake Bay Retriever. Estrogen... lovely, lovely estrogen... :0)
