Bringing Out the Best In Yourself

Here we go again… as the clocks rolled back and the calendar pages flipped, I could feel it in the air – the holidays are coming.
When I was working yesterday to remove spider webbing from trees, flying bats from my kitchen and vigorously scrubbing orange frosting from my carpet, I heard a sound… It was the sound of bells coming from my basement.
What to my wondering ears???
Well, it seems my daughter had wrestled down, off the top shelf of our nearly-tipping-over-stacked pile of Christmas decorations, a magical little music box that plays a beautiful instrumental bell version of various Christmas classics… my heart lightened as I listened to the sound.
This moment caused me to reflect on how the holidays bring out the best in me. I feel energetic, creative, thankful, appreciated, happy, light-hearted, generous and so much more (it also made me sad to think of how it all comes to a screeching halt on January 2nd – but I won’t dwell on that right now).
So, inspired by the bells and with my mood instantly lifted I wondered… how do other people feel about the holidays?
I imagine there are many who are not quite as tickled by the season as I - it can be a stressful time (too much to do and not enough time to do it), a sad time (a time that might accentuate the loss of a loved-one), or a lonely time (a time when you struggle to feel connected). But wouldn’t it be nice if that could change? And with that in mind I thought “how can I impart a little cheer throughout the upcoming season?”… How can I do what I love to do and help others in the process?
After some thought I decided I’d like to donate some time to a complimentary holiday gift wrap station – ultimately at the near-by nursing home. I’ve got a folding table, tons of gift wrap and ribbon and plenty of band-aids for paper cuts. Although I haven’t quite figured out if this idea will fly, I’m sure the answer is just a few phone calls away.

Kristen that is a great idea to help out with gift wrapping! I'm sure you'll find plenty of places who'll take you up on that offer :) I too find the holidays exciting and energizing. I love the spirit of the season, the music, the lights, the decorations, all of it. I also find because I have a limited budget, I enjoy the season almost like a game of chess trying to figure how to make it all happen, pouring over sale flyers, saving coupons, stashing goodies in closets starting at the end of summer... Such fun! I was thinking of taking my kids caroling this year - do people still do that?

Caroling would be such a happy way to spread cheer - I bet you can sing too! Go for it!

I love the holidays as well. It is so much fun deciding as a family what our special activities will be. Each year I put up the lights earlier and earlier.

That is a WONDERFUL idea!!! Wrapping can be hard for folks. Many times Long Term Care units have an Activities Dept. that helps the folks buy gifts etc. Setting up a station to wrap the gifts would likely be a godsend to them.
My happiest holiday memories are those of home made cookies and home made gifts, stringing popcorn while watching "A Christmas Story", quoting "You'll shoot your eye out!" when the kids do something naughty.
We just might do some neighborhood caroling this year, YES Erika, people still do it :)

I always go caroling around several Portland nursing homes with my M2M Older Moms group - we make that our December meeting, go round to a few places to sing and than have dinner together. The residents so enjoy having us sing for them...

I am always humbled by those who volunteer. Great idea. I plan on one day being as good a person as you are. Really, I swear it. I, too, love the holidays. I love watching my kids open their gifts on Christmas morning. I remember, when I was young, noticing my mother smiling as we plowed through presents -- I felt sorry for her. I thought how awful it must be to not have a bunch of gifts from Santa Claus.
