This Year It Will Be...and Other Fibs I Know

WHOA! Is it already holiday time creeping up? Or should I saying blatantly blazing its furious trail onward?
The first weekend in November seems to throw me into a panic. I - who have a "gift closet" that starts during the summer and the beginnings of craft projects lined up for months, in preparation for the holidays so I DON'T HAVE TO HAVE THE YEARLY PANIC - am getting nervous. Church fairs and the local Hallmark holiday promo's are the first signs. Forget the holiday music - that's been going on for weeks some places.
I am counting the "shopping days" left (not easy to miss, as I work in retail now) and all I can say is, and I quote myself from every year I've known myself since about the age of about 21:
"This year, things will be simpler."
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.
So I look to you, who are mostly my "younger" sisters but loaded with wisdom:
Ideas for simplifying?
What do you do to trim down, in terms of expense and energy?
Is it possible to reverse a long-held tradition of approaching holidays with great intentions but still getting caught up in doing too much?
How do you lower your own expectations? Others' expectations of you as Mom/sister/aunt/etc and does anyone want to come clean my house for me? (ha ha - just testing...)
The one with the best suggestions gets an all-expense paid trip to view my un-given gifts from the last 15 years which include bargain items from the teen store at the mall (10 for $10 - how can you beat that deal?!?,) handmade note cards from a church fair I went to in NH 12 years ago, and 3 brand new junk jewelry items I bought on sale in NC several trips ago, needing only partial repair...

EventerMom says,
Since we have alot of children in the family - all 10 and older - we use the itunes and other gift card route. Especially economical since we have to mail many gifts. The teens love gift cards.

Gift cards are good - just got one for one of my daughters at a clothing store she likes. I'm hoping that I can do it a little at a time - I got the gift card in the middle of one of my Maine Mall power walks. Still not too crowded there - yet.

itune gift cards are the bomb. Always the right size and color and sure to elicit an "AWESOME" by the receiver!

KathyEliscu says,
Yeah - I don't really get the whole itune thing. Guess I have some learning to do...

LUV2LOSE says,
Don't do it, Kathy! It will cost you a lot of money. I've bought more than 800 songs on itunes. I was better off before I got hooked, well, maybe no better off, but certainly had more money! ;-)

I will come and clean your house if you come and clean mine! I always say I am going to start earlier and of course still have the last minute rush. No matter when I start I shop until they close the stores on Christmas Eve. So this year I am not going to say anything......Our family has stopped exchanging gifts. So I just have to shop for the day care kids and my kids. The hubby works for that place that sells flannel shirts for our Christmas cash, so far I have used all of that for bills......

How 'bout we just find someone to clean both of our houses and we go to the movies?!?!?

I love Christmas and really stick to a low budget on gift giving. I would love to give much more, but it's not in my wallet to do so. My husband and I have gotten bonuses at Christmas the last few years and are also allowed to cash in unused vacation time at that time. We use that for our gift giving. I do miss the days when I could go to the dollar store and pick up lots of things the kids loved and spend barely anything for them to have a Merry Christmas.

KathyEliscu says,
I know, huh? When the kids are small, they like everything! Although, my big kids are not picky at all. It's my own internal pressure about this. Maybe this year really will be different. I'm going to try to make it so.

You're a riot! Here's something to gnaw on--pretend you have to pack only one suitcase and travel 3K to see your relatives and all of your gifts have to fit in that suitcase LOL But I like your style GF, I too have a gift box so that I won't be caught unawares. However, then I forget I bought the stuff and end up "unaware" anyway! Too SAD for words!

Ann - Big break-through!!!!!! Weekend in NY and I bought NOTHING!!!!!!! Wooo-hoooo! OK, I did take Christmas "orders" but really, I think I've got a plan to keep it streamlined. Really. REALLY. xox
