Each month, Raising Maine and Bei Capelli give a Maine mom a much-needed new look. This month’s lucky mom is Bowdoin’s Lori MacDonald.Lori is a new mom and will be going back to work after maternity leave. Her husband, Jason, nominated her because, as a nurse, she is always taking care of others, and now as a mom she has less time for herself.
“She has always worked the extra shift to help someone in need of some time off. I would like to give her a day to relax and feel like the queen she deserves to feel like,” Jason said.
Raising Maine and Bei Capelli wanted to give Lori a stylish makeover that would suit her new lifestyle as a working mom. Bei Capelli stylist and co-owner Nancy Cartonio and stylist Ashleigh Cabana worked together to give Lori a new look that fits her life, whether she’s at work, home or play.
NANCY’S THOUGHTS
“Because Lori is a new mom, she really wanted something that could wash and go, and also because she’s a nurse she needs to be able to pull (her hair) away from her face. We started by cutting off seven inches! This released her natural curl, so we cut where it was falling to give her a graduated bob that really highlights her face shape and brings out her eyes.
“Because her hair is thick, we did soft, round layers within the cut to give it shape and dimension. We used a light moisturizing shampoo and conditioner as well as an anti-frizz serum that she can use daily to smooth and calm the curl without losing any shape.
“For color, we kept it simple to complement the natural highlights in her warm brown hair. The honey blonde highlights with a caramel glaze brighten up her hair and will look natural as they grow out. The glaze adds tons of shine to keep it looking fresh and healthy.”
LORI’S THOUGHTS
“I love it! I never would have done this on my own; I wouldn’t have been brave enough to go this short. I’ve never had short hair like this, but it’s so much lighter and has a lot more body. When it was long, it was really weighed down, but I like to wear it curly, so I’m happy that it’s curlier now – it has a lot of bounce. I’ve done highlights before, but I love the way this looks – natural, and also low-maintenance.”
JASON’S THOUGHTS
“I have never wanted my wife to cut her beautiful long hair, and now I couldn’t imagine her without short hair. I could not have given her this gift without the help from Raising Maine and Bei Capelli. She looks beautiful.”
