Half-way chickens

You know that joke, "Why did the chicken cross the road?"

It's meaningless at our house. The Almeida chickens don't cross the road -- they stop in the middle of it.

They do not seem to have the desire to actually get to the other side.

And even after beeping the horn repeatedly and driving really close to them, they don't budge.

One of several fearless hens in the Almeida driveway.

It usually takes one of the kids jumping out of the car to shoo her away.

We're not sure how Lucky Lucy broke her leg last summer but recently we've speculated that maybe she was one of our half-way chickens we just didn't notice.

That reminds me. I was chasing a turkey this morning on the way to work. Well not intentionally.

Here's the deal. As I was cruising at speed limit, there was a wild turkey in the road. It saw me coming and took flight.

Instead of making a beeline for the side of the road, it headed down the road - away from me. It kept a course parallel with the shoulder while staying a few feet off the pavement.

I had to brake to keep from melding the turkey with my grill work.

For a moment I was tempted to get out my camera. Believe it or not, the northern view of a south-bound turkey can be kind of poetic and graceful.

But I really didn't want to have to explain all this to the officer investigating the accident.

Luckily, the turkey veered to the right. Maybe not luckily. I haven't figured out what's for dinner tonight.
