A friend of mine who knows I like candy told me about the Today Show's piece about how Hershey has changed their chocolate bar ingredients. They've taken out the cocoa butter and substituted it with vegetable oil. Apparently the company can save money by using vegetable oil but according to the FDA, it's technically NOT chocolate anymore. I like a Hershey bar every once in a while and have never liked Nestle's chocolate. Now I'm not so sure I'll like Hershey anymore either (haven't had the new bars with the vegie oil chocolate yet). Here's the video segment about the chocolate-not-being-chocolate-anymore story. And if you want to read the blog by the woman they interviewed writes, it's Candy Blog. Her blog takes an interesting look at every tiny detail about all kinds of candy and how they taste. Even being a life-long candy fan, I'm an amateur compared to this woman. Anyone tried the "new" Hershey products with the fake chocolate yet?

I'm not sure but I do think it was recently. I read this blog entry about the rising cost of chocolate and Hershey's decision to change to a cheaper ingredient. It was from August 2008 - www.typetive.com/candyblog/item/rising_cost_of_candy

I saw the segment this morning at work. So when I stopped at Hannaford for groceries I checked out the candy aisle. Almost all of the Hershey products I found said Milk Chocolate still, except the kissables. They are supposed to keep the mostly chocolate products milk chocolate and not just chocolatey. It will definately be something I watch out for in the future.

There was a time when Hershey changes would bother me, but I'm a 70% cacao dark chocolate gal now. I treat myself to a piece of melt in your mouth almost nightly - hey, more antioxidents than spinach, right?

Mmm, chocolate, one of my favorite topics! Yup, 70% cacao or better is quality stuff and not bad for you either! I've tried a few different brands but don't have a favorite "high test" chocolate yet...I'm willing to try a few more to see if I like them. Yeah........Any suggestions?
