We all know it’s important for women to get enough calcium to protect their bones from osteoporosis. But to be honest, some days milk and yogurt, my stand-by calcium sources, don’t seem that appealing. So I’ll try to sneak it in other ways. A grilled cheese for lunch. Milk instead of water in my hot cocoa or instead of creamer in my coffee. Tomato soup, cream-style with milk. I'm running out of creative ideas though, so just wondering... What tricks do other people have for making sure they get enough calcium in their daily diet?

Women (and men) under 50 are shooting for 1000 mg of calcium per day, 1-3 y.o children need 500 mg/day, 4-8 y.o children need 800 mg/day, and teenagers need 1300 mg/day. Some ideas not mentioned so far: sardines and canned salmon (canned and eaten with the bones!!), navy or pinto beans, and almonds are all good calcium sources. Some people make oatmeal with milk instead of water. Calcium fortified orange juice or soy milk. Nonfat dry milk solids added to things like soup or homemade bread. And my personal favorite, a 12 oz. cafe latte, which has 400 mg. of calcium!

Garelick Farms makes a milk with extra calcium called Over the Moon Milk. The chocolate Fat Free is so good. They are holding a recipe contest right now for the Over the Moon Milk. If you use Over the Moon Milk as an ingredient in your recipe you could win $1,000 and a years membership to Curves and Curves Complete. The recipe will also appear in the Raising Maine Publication. You can enter right on their website www.garelickfarms.com/contest. It is only being held in the state of Maine so chances of winning are pretty good.
